I subscribe to an e-mail service, through RJ Reynolds, called My Smokers Rights. This e-mail service allows me to stay on top of legislation regarding cigarettes and smokers rights. I received an e-mail yesterday that was rather disturbing. Looks like the FDA is trying to take steps towards prohibition of tobacco products. Yes, I understand how bad smoking is for you and the people around you. I also know it is my right. I feel that if you are going to bring the hammer down on tobacco, then you need to do so on alcohol too. Smoking doesn’t cause any traffic accidents or render people unable to make decisions. Smoking Marlboro doesn’t make people violent or unable to walk and talk. If the government wants to better my life and look out for my best interests, they should socialize healthcare and drive down prescription drug cost. They should look into the effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup and they should fund stem cell research. Cures for cancer are around the corner with stem cell research. That means I can get lung cancer and they could cure it.

Hoping to counterbalance the growing smokes online lobby, tobacco makers have established an association that aims to protect the rights of Canadian free smokes. The Canadian Tobacco Manufacturer’s Council announced $2.5 million in funding for the new initiative on Tuesday. "Our research shows that adult cheap smokes want to get involved in discussions about existing cigarettes controls as well as new regulations that are on the table,'’ council president Pierre Fortier told reporters in Toronto. Fortier, who is also vice-president of corporate affairs for Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd., said this is smokes chance to be heard. "Positions will only emerge if adults who cheap smokes use this platform to voice their issues." Based around the website MyChoice.ca, the non-profit organization is funded by Sigarettes Imperial; Rothmans, Benson and Hedges Inc. and JTI-Macdonald Corp. It’s not intended to promote discount smokes, however, as manufacturers say, aside from the initial funding, they plan to take a hands-off approach to the group. According to MyChoice.ca president Nancy Daigneault, the idea is actually to provide smokers with "the resources and tools to ensure they are no longer ignored by decision makers.'’ As taxpayers exercising their legal right to smoke, Daigneault says there’s no reason they should be treated as second-class citizens. "Smokers have the same rights as everyone else to be consulted and to have their concerns taken into account — but you wouldn’t know it from the way they are treated.'’ Health Canada estimates five million Canadians still use tobacco. Manitoba and New Brunswick have instituted the first provincewide bans prohibiting smoking in practically all enclosed public places and workplaces. Those come into effect on October 1. Saskatchewan follows suit in January, while several other provinces already have partial bans that only allow smoking in specially ventilated rooms. According to Rob Cunningham of the Canadian Cancer Society, it’s that tide of bans taking hold across the country that has the cigarette gasping desperately. "It’s no coincidence that the tobacco industry is losing this battle," Cunningham told CTV News. "And now they’re ratcheting up their efforts." Anti-smoking activist Gar Mahood agrees, deriding the online initiative as a smoke screen. "This is not an industry which has compassion for smokers and it’s trying to do the old spin."

"I never free smokes until I was 41," Antony Worrall Thompson said last year. "It was all the fault of women. The ones I liked smokes, so I thought I’d do it too." To the disappointment of the nation’s yellow-fingered campaigners for smokers’ rights, the celebrity chef has finally decided to pack in the cigarettes, telling me that he has been off the dreaded weed for a month. Disappointing news for the pro-puffing group Forest, since "the squashed Bee Gee" (Gordon Ramsay’s words) has been one of its most outspoken patrons ahead of this summer’s ban on smoking in public places. "I’ve got to say it hasn’t been nearly as bad as I thought it would be, I’m doing fine," Wozza tells me. "It hasn’t been like the last time when I stopped for a few weeks before I ran the London Marathon. I felt absolutely terrible then." (He staggered from the finishing line to The Savoy for champagne, a chip butty and a ciggie; he collapsed.) Worrall Thompson was speaking at a dinner in his restaurant Notting Grill to promote the sweetener Splenda; he avoids sugar and has been watching his health of late, having been diagnosed with the condition Syndrome X, which increases the risk of developing diabetes. "This doesn’t mean I’ll stop supporting Forest," he added. "I firmly believe that if someone wants to smoke, that’s their decision." Worrall Thompson was a renowned scrounger of Marlboro cigarettes , so if smokers are looking for a positive, they can at last stop gripping their packets in his presence. Every (smoke) cloud…

I am really sick and tired of the so called do gooders trying to stop everyone from smoking. smokes contribute a vast sum of money to the upkeep of the goverment finances. The arguement against smokers is so pathetic, the smell etc. I have even seen reports of toxic fumes and even the toxic chemicals in the cigarette ends. These people have not opened their eyes, the major cause of toxic chemicals is the ejection of chewing gum onto our streets and pavements by those persons who have stopped or even never smoked. The pollution issue is a laugh, driving a 1000cc car to work in the morning uses more Oxygen during the journey to work than I do, as a smoker, during 24 hours. What about the stench of garlic/curries, hot food consumed in confined spaced which I am subject to by Non smokers. All men are born equal and have a right to breath and use the air as we wish with respect to others. I choose to have a Cigarettes online , which I enjoy, causing less pollution than thosewho don’t smoke who drive cars. The air that we breathe is a God given gift - If you want to - Drive a car - Turn on a light and pollute a great deal more than me - then why shouldn’t I be allowed to enjoy a Sigarettes without being tarnished as a drug addict. If you want to ban smoking then find some other way of raising ?5M per day - possibly a tax on garlic/breaking wind/chewing gum/ or even petulism. That would raise a great deal for the inland revenue. I say live AND LET LIVE - Leave me alone - I choose not to be dictated to by the minority. During a recent poll less than 30% of the population where against smoking.

Representative Lois Capps (CA-D), the leader of a group of US representatives asking women’s magazines to stop publishing cigarette ads, is dissatisfied with the apathy she’s receiving from the industry."I am extremely disappointed with the decision of these 11 women’s magazines to continue running ads promoting cigarette smoking," said the California Democrat in the report by Advertising Age.Under particular fire by the group is a new set of ads from Camel, which is marketing its new brand, No. 9, heavily to young female cosmopolitans."These ads encourage a fatally addictive habit and are especially targeted at young women. It’s just flat-out hypocritical to run stories about becoming more beautiful and healthy while promoting a dangerous product responsible for killing hundreds of thousands of people a year."Thomas Florio of Vogue suggested a better recourse may be to pass restrictions via Congress, rather than trying to guilt-trip femme-mag publishers."As members of the media, we at Vogue continue to practice our right of freedom of the press, expressing our views on such topics without pressure from, or regard for, a company who may advertise in Vogue, now or in the future," said Mr. Florio in a letter toted by Capps."In our opinion, however, the goal of Congress should be to create legal guidelines for the marketing, distribution and sale of tobacco products, rather than to bring pressure on a magazine to forgo its legal right to conduct business as approved by lawmakers of the United States."And Editor in Chief Cynthia Leive of Glamour added that while magazine editorial consistently warns women against smoking, the act remains a personal choice, and bearing smoking ads is legal."In the coming weeks we will continue to highlight the hypocrisy of these magazines’ actions and pursue alternative means to encourage them to do the right thing," Capps vowed.555 Belomorkanal Bond Camel Chesterfield Dallas Davidoff Dunhill Epique EsseGauloises Karelia Kent L&M Lucky Strike Magna Marlboro Marlboro Mild Seven Monte Carlo More Pall Mall Parliament Peter I R1 Rothmans Russian Style Salem Sobranie Sovereign Viceroy Virginia Slims Vogue WestWinston

Cathy Kaufmann, communications director for the pro-Measure 50 campaign, Healthy Kids Oregon, said the opposition campaign’s message has been misleading or flat wrong. For example, opponents claim that less than 30 percent of the buy cheap cigarettes tax revenue would go to the Healthy Kids Program. Measure backers say that’s based on a misreading of the revenue distribution formula drawn up by the Legislature, which they said would put most of the money into children’s health care.

The pro-Measure 50 camp also has taken exception to opponents’ claim that HMOs and the insurance industry are behind Measure 50, when it’s actually been backed by many other sectors, too, Kaufmann said. Donors include the cancer, heart and lung associations, labor unions, and an array of children’s advocacy groups.

I have just cancelled my subscription to Omni magazine and I feel it is necessary to inform the MIT community of what I think is a giant step backwards in the fight for women’s rights. While reading the May 1989 issue of Omni, I came across a pamphlet-type advertisement for camel cigarettes in the center of the magazine. I did not know that the ad was for Camel until I turned the page. The front of the ad showed a picture of a seductive-looking blond with the caption "Bored, lonely, restless? What you need is …" Upon turning the page, I was faced with Camel’s "foolproof" advice on "How to impress someone at the beach" entitled "Smooth Move #334." First on the list was, "Run into the water, grab someone and drag her back to the shore, as if you’ve saved her from drowning. The more she kicks and screams, the better."
